"The selfless act of doing good in secrecy for the sole purpose of its own sake."
That's the literal meaning of this term. It is a Japanese moral which I found very captivating and beautiful.
I came across this "concept" while I was browsing for "ways to calm yourself after a stormy emotional episode" - yes, it is an actual search term that I wrote - anyways, I stumbled upon this term and I got curious to know more about it. The more I read about the concept the more I am eager to live by it and make it my motto.
It comes, with no surprise, that I am a human who believes that our beings as humans are meant to be on higher states than our current ones. We are meant to elevate above and beyond our basic instincts of expectations and rewards. I believe we are created for a higher purpose which dictates giving more and expecting less.
Perhaps this belief stems from the bigger concept of "we are created good, some with bad intentions, but at the end, we are all created with goodness in us." whatever the roots of this belief might be, it is undeniable fact that is something which is deeply in-craved in my being.
Goodness and kindness must come from a selfless place of your heart.
I believe that the highest form of giving is the one made with no expectations or rewards. Give people love, care, and support without expecting them to gift you with the same. It will make your heart fulfilled and happy. I used to think, just like Joey from Friends, that "there is no good deed that is selfless. All good deeds are made to make us feel good ourselves and hence it is selfish." however, this is starting to slowly change now.
I now believe that if we do good and be humble for the sole purpose to makes others feel happiness then that is selfless. Yes, you may feel good in the process, but that is okay - as long as you spread that feeling to others you are still being a selfless giver and that is pure by itself.
May you find in you the power to give with no return and love with no expectations.
